About the DOE Alumni Network:

The Department of Energy (DOE) Alumni Network is a newly forming organization dedicated to fostering a vibrant and enduring community of former DOE staff. Our mission is to unite former DOE staff in a collaborative community that provides career support, facilitates policy engagement, and champions the agency's vital role in advancing transformational science and technology solutions for the nation.

Position Summary:

The Executive Director will be the foundational leader responsible for launching, developing, and growing the DOE Alumni Network. This individual will drive the strategic vision, build a strong organizational infrastructure, cultivate relationships with alumni and stakeholders, and secure the resources necessary to achieve the network's mission. The ideal candidate will be a highly credible, results-oriented, and passionate advocate for DOE and its enduring impact.

Key Responsibilities:


Strategic Leadership & Vision:

  • Develop and articulate a compelling strategic vision for the DOE Alumni Network, guiding its growth and impact.
  • Set the organizational culture, ensuring it is inclusive, collaborative, and mission-driven.
  • Lead the development of programs and initiatives that align with the network's mission and meet the needs of its diverse membership.
 

Organizational Development & Management:

  • Build and manage the network's operational infrastructure, including governance, staffing (as needed), and administrative processes.
  • Oversee the effective execution of all network activities, from events to policy initiatives.
  • Ensure financial sustainability through effective fundraising and resource management.
 

Community Engagement & Relationship Building:

  • Cultivate deep relationships with DOE alumni across all offices, career stages, and political affiliations.
  • Act as the primary "face" and spokesperson for the network, engaging with members, partners, and the broader public.
  • Foster collaboration and a sense of camaraderie among alumni, encouraging active participation and volunteerism.
  • Build and manage relationships with key external stakeholders, including philanthropic funders, industry leaders, congressional staff, and other agency alumni networks.
 

Policy & Advocacy Engagement:

  • Facilitate opportunities for alumni to engage in informed policy discussions related to DOE's mission.
  • Oversee initiatives to capture and share institutional knowledge that can inform current and future administrations and policy development.
  • Ensure the network's activities maintain a non-partisan approach while effectively advocating for DOE's enduring value.


Qualifications:

 

Experience:

  • Proven experience working within the Department of Energy (DOE) in one or more roles, demonstrating a deep understanding of its mission, structure, and culture.
  • Prior leadership experience in a non-profit organization, volunteer-driven initiative, or similar community-building effort is highly preferred.
  • Experience in organizing events, managing projects, and building collaborative teams.
  • Familiarity with the broader energy landscape and key stakeholders (government, industry, academia, non-profits).
  • 3+ years in a leadership role required.

  • Exceptional organizational and execution skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging diverse audiences (from early career staff to senior executives and external partners).
  • Strategic thinking and the ability to articulate a clear vision.
  • Proven ability to build and motivate volunteer teams.
  • Financial acumen and experience managing budgets.
  • Political savvy with a demonstrated commitment to viewpoint inclusivity.

PAY:

  • The final base salary will be based on locality and experience and is meant to be competitive with the SES. The range for someone based in D.C. will be $160,980- $204,716. In addition to the base salary, staff are eligible for a tenure bonus. 
 

BENEFITS:

The DOE Alumni Network team will be administratively housed at the Environmental Protection Network (EPN). EPN will oversee both payroll and benefits administration for this role. Please see the details on the benefits below. 

The Environmental Protection Network is a fully remote virtual environment. We think about our compensation as a package of total rewards that starts with a competitive salary. 

Work-Life Balance:

  • 11 paid Federal Holidays and other paid days when the office is closed (including the work day before or after July 4, the day after Thanksgiving, and the work days between December 25th and January 1).
  • 3 weeks (120 hours) of paid time off (inclusive of sick, personal days, and vacation).
